Event propagation and peventDefault

Let’s look at sample html.

And here is the javascript code. Run the code with jQuery-1.3.2 .

jQuery recommends including stylesheets before including javascripts

I was going through jQuery documentation and came across this.

Note: Please make sure that all stylesheets are included before your scripts (especially those that call the ready function). Doing so will make sure that all element properties are correctly defined before jQuery code begins executing. Failure to do this will cause sporadic problems, especially on WebKit-based browsers such as Safari.

So be sure to include all your stylesheets before including javascripts.

Change in line-up

I got an e-mail last night suggesting that Jason Hoffman won't be able to attend the conference. It seems that this is indeed the case. These things happen, I suppose!
However, as a motivational speaker might tell you, these sort of things are not problems, but opportunities, and in fact, its all turning out rather well!

Instead ofJason, we can now hear from Fred George - a former ThoughtWorks Vice President, Agile Guru and someone with 40 years experience in IT - who has written code not just in Ruby, but 60 other languages!

Thinking

That the recent brouhaha over the death of XHTML2 is totally overdone. After all, the spec was so fucking obtuse & abstract that no browser vendor was going to implement it.

I mean, the authors wanted to get rid of the IMG tag, fer chrissakes!

Adding prompt to select_tag

Rails's select method is pretty advanced. You can pass in all sorts of funky options to format your selector nicely, including :include_blank => true and the related :prompt => 'Pick one or else!'
select_tag, however, seems to have fallen behind in the usefulness-stakes and implements neither of the above...

Warning Explanation: actionpack-2.3.2/lib/action_controller/record_identifier.rb:76: warning: Object#id will be deprecated; use Object#object_id

This warning can happen if you treat an object from a non-active record class like an active record object. For example, you might have a class that wraps a few AR objects.

One hack to get rid of the warning is to just define the method id on your wrapper class.

Check out the documentation for RecordIdentifier here

In-depth JRuby Q&A: What Makes JRuby Tick in 2010?

JRuby is undoubtedly the most mature of the alternative Ruby implementations. Supporting Ruby 1.8.7 and 1.9.1 (mostly!) and JIT compilation, JRuby is already in use in mission critical Ruby apps and runs scarily fast on the JVM. In this interview with JRuby core member, Charles Nutter, we dig deep into what makes JRuby tick.

Congratulations Are in Order!
