Rackspace Move Scheduled for Sunday, September 27th at 5PM Pacific Time

On Sunday, September 27th at 5PM Pacific time (see it in your timezone) we will begin the final move to Rackspace. We are aiming to have less than an hour of website and push unavailability if everything goes according to plan. During this period, public and private clone, fetch, and pull operations will continue to function normally.

Managing source with a distributed team

Background

Many months ago we switched from using subversion to using git. A couple of our braver folks pushed this change through in the face of a few complaints from other team members. There is a learning curve. We got through this learning curve more quickly than I expected. Now looking back, I can see that the learning curve has several plateaus followed by steep inclines. In this post, I will describe where we were in our git scm process and where we are now.

Structs inside out

Today we’re back to normal blog mode, where each article stands for itself. Muppet Labs are closed and we will be continuing our journey across the Ruby universe starting with an indepth look at Ruby’s Struct class — Ruby’s Swiss army knife for structured data.

Struct can be used without any additional require statement — it’s just there. This means it comes with zero additional overhead during initial interpreter startup — one of the many advantage of using Struct. But first let’s look at the basics.

12 Interesting Upcoming Ruby and Rails Events (That Aren’t Sold Out)

Wanted to go to JRubyConf or RubyConf this year? Tough - they're sold out already. Luckily, though, there are some interesting upcoming events that you can still get in to - some online, some in multiple cities, some held in youth centers, some in hotels, and even one on a tropical island. Whew!

(Update: Removed Aloha on Rails as it has sold out - thanks to Tammer Saleh for the note.)

Blink #2 - 21st September 2009

My second installment of “interesting” links.

Keeping controllers empty with faux attributes

Say we have a website where the customers have 1 week free trials. Say that there are also administrators who want to occasionally reset the trial period of a customer.

The lots of code way

We could do this with a controller action and a link:

Renaming Temporarily Disabled

Both user and repository renaming are temporarily disabled. Sorry about that!

It’s for a good cause. Should be back in a week.

5 Things to Look for in JRuby 1.4

The team has finally wrapped up the long summer of JRuby-related travel, and it’s time to set our sights on a new version of JRuby for the community to lovingly embrace.

The release itself is tentatively planned to enter a round of release candidates at the end of September. Please prepare yourselves, try the release candidates when they are available, and most importantly, report bugs!

Interesting Ruby and Rails Tidbits #31

The latest installment of our series of roundup posts, covering some of our latest findings in the world of all things Ruby (or not). These items wouldn't make it in as separate posts, but they should be of enough interest to Rubyists generally to make it a worthwhile browse for most readers.

Remaining Ruby & Rails Conferences in 09

The Ruby and Rails community is still growing strong and the sheer number of conferences coming up is proof of that. Below I’ve put together a list of all the conferences/events I could find before 2010 so you can hopefully make it out to at least one. ;-)

If you do attend one of these conferences, do me a favor and thank the organizer for taking the time to produce the event. Most of them spend a great deal of unpaid time making the event happen and most of them aren’t making a profit. Their passion and hard work helps keep our community strong.

Germany in September

So, I’ll definitely be attending RailsConf Europe this year (in addition to a slew of other conferences), and I’ve decided that this is the perfect opportunity to look around. I’ve never been to Germany, though it’s always been on my list.

What makes it even better is that I’ll be bringing along my wife, Melissa, for a few days away from our two lovely, but exhausting sons. Melissa’s father was adopted from Berlin as a child, so she’s always had an interest in visiting.
