Using Wikipedia and Ruby to make timelines
I’m taking several history-ish classes this quarter, so I’ve been thinking a lot about dates. It would be cool to compare dates and events from radically different histories.
Wikipedia has tons of history articles with dates everywhere. I spent a half hour today and wrote a quick app to compare when things happened in multiple wiki articles.
With timelines, you can compare, say, the history of Russia with the history of Communism, or the history of Biology with the history of physics. But, while those are interesting, what’s cooler is that you can compare the history of Russia with the history of Biology, or the history of Russia with the history of Airplanes and the history of cake.
It’s still in early stages (it only parses dates that written like “in xxxx”), but if you’re interested, check it out at mischa/timelines
