MWRC - Thanks you, that what awesome!

We are at the airport on the way back to Denver from the MountainWest RubyConf. This was the best conference I went to in years. Fast passed talk with just incredible material and every presenter was just excellent. So to the organizers and presenters....Thank you!

Easily receive pop e-mail in rails

A few days ago I wrote an example app that shows how to do this:

http://github.com/mischa/receive_mail_example_app/

I recommend reading the files in this order:

config/mailer_daemon.yml
app/models/message_mailer.rb
script/mailer_daemon_fetcher
lib/daemon.rb

Phusion Passenger 2.1.2 packages for Ubuntu

Following Friday’s release of Passenger 2.1.2 by the Phusion folks, we’ve updated our Ubuntu packages.  We’ve been testing version 2.1.1 packages for a little while now and they’ve been very stable, supporting both Rails 2.3 and older apps that still depend on Rack 0.4 (such as older Sinatra apps).

Things that don't go as planned

Things that haven't gone as planned lately:

Managing a beta book in PDF/InDesign format.

D'oh on that one. It's taking a lot longer to update the book than I expected, because of the layout issues.

And by "issue" I mean "my boneheaded decision to do the book in InDesign, even from the first beta."

I'm sorry. I goofed.

So, informal poll:

  • would you guys rather get frequent small updates (e.g. a PDF of only the newest chapter), or
  • a couple big updates (with the whole book)?

Let me know.

Make Test::Unit display errors earlier

Just a monkey patch to make Test::Unit display errors as soon as they happen.

Rails Envy Podcast – Episode #070: 03/13/2009

Episode 70. I was going to try and copy Gregg from last week but my dog can’t talk yet to do the introduction. Darn obedience classes. Obie Fernandez from Hashrocket co-hosts this week and we have a blast. I hope you all enjoy the show and am sorry for the delay. But it’s a good one, I promise!

The Confreaks guys did setup their cameras, sound and lights, so you will certainly be able to see all the talks in a few weeks.

Hirb - Irb On The Good Stuff

Irb is a great place for interacting with Ruby. Unfortunately, even with the colorful help of wirble, it’s not so great for visualizing the output of those interactions. Hirb aims to change that.
